In 20 years people will ask “What did Bixby Knolls look like back in the day?” We answer that question right now by documenting the entire area as it stands in 2009. Help create a time capsule for the archives of the Historical Society of Long Beach and a time piece for the neighborhood. We also encourage you to be as creative as possible with your digital manipulation of images for the “Best Digital Art” category. For those interested in creating an art piece we want you to take images from Bixby Knolls and create something spectacular using all the tricks available in digital photography. Hit the streets and capture all the beauty, nuances and charm of Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Virginia Country Club and Los Cerritos neighborhoods. The photo canvas includes the businesses, the people, the environment, the streets, and the subtleties of this special area of Long Beach all during a 24-hour period. What does a typical day look like in “the Knolls?” For 1,440 minutes, beginning at noon on the summer solstice, Saturday, June 20, 2009, and ending at noon on Sunday, June 21, 2009, life in Bixby Knolls will be immortalized through digital photography. Overall winning images per category and best 50 images BKBIA will showcase winning photos as a First Fridays exhibit, Friday, August 7, at the Expo building, 4321 Atlantic Avenue, 8pm – 10pm. There are prizes for a number of categories including Best Digital Art Piece, Bixby Interiors, Best Business Photo, Best Neighborhood Photo, Best “Subtlety” BIXBY IN DIGITAL ART We want to see what you can do with Photoshop and similar software. Go beyond touching up the photo. Be creative with your photos, but still retain the essence of Bixby Knolls. Source images must be included with digital art submission. FIND THE SUBTLETIES Long Beach has so many different and vibrant neighborhoods that are unique in their own way. We are seeking to definitively capture through digital images Bixby Knolls and surrounding neighborhoods with the subtleties that make the area so special. There is so much to discover in Bixby Knolls and this is your chance to explore your creative, humorous, artsy, or serious side to showcase our community. Get behind the surface and closed doors and shoot the best “Bixby Interiors.” The contest aims to capture special moments during 24 hours of this small “box” within our city limits. We expect that these images will speak volumes about how truly special the neighborhoods of Long Beach are. So, picture this: Amateur and seasoned photographers of all ages, taking photographs around each corner, down every street, and from every angle that really define the personality of Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Virginia Country Club and Los Cerritos during the same 24-hour period. Anyone can enter -- just start snapping digital photos at noon on Saturday, June 21, 2009 of whatever and whomever you like within the designated boundaries during the day and/or night. Photos might include, but are not limited to business/commerce, home life, work, sports, nature/landscape, wildlife, indoor life, outdoor living, pets, interiors of homes and businesses, architecture, humor, drama, action, friends, family, or historical places in the area.
